How to Make a Grapevine Wreath

Make your own grapevine wreath using just a handful of vines. This is one of my favorite projects because cuttings from the garden can be recycled to make something new — breathing fresh life into your home or outdoor space no matter the season.

Many of the plants we grow in our gardens appreciate hard, periodic pruning. Some, like grapes, kiwis and roses, require pruning during dormancy which means during winter months. In fact, grapes flower and fruit on new growth, so pruning is essential for next season’s harvest.

Vines in particular generally grow with abandon, producing what will end up as a pile of cuttings. You can compost your trimmings or save them and make them into something new, like a wreath. Use the simple tips demonstrated in the video to make your own — for yourself or a friend.

If you don’t have grapevines on hand try using other pliable cuttings such as thornless rose vines, weaving wreaths as you prune from one season to the next. Grapevine wreaths look beautiful as is or decorated with trimmings from your garden. These simple tips will give you the start you need.

Add dried or fresh flowers, seed pods, greens, berries, leaves or even feathers and other things you find in nature. Leave the tendrils to run wild, add lichens, moss or anything else you love. This is where the fun begins.

    • Thank you, Heather! I appreciate it. 🙂

I’ve made mini rosemary wreaths for napkin rings but have yet to use periwinkle. Sounds wonderful! I’ll have to try it this spring. Any tips?
